Is Eating A Low Carb Diet Heart Unhealthy

| June 22, 2011 | Comments(21)

Low carb diets are no longer as trendy as they were earlier in the decade when the Atkins diet took the weight loss world by storm. Fortunately, fad diets eventually die down and the Atkins style low carbohydrate diet met a similar fate. Despite its decline in popularity, many people still practice some form of carb restriction when trying to lose weight. Now, a new study raises new concerns about low carb dieting and the risk of heart disease.

A small, eight week study involving twenty-four people was recently published in the journal Diabetes. Researchers gave a group of twenty-four people either a low carbohydrate diet consisting of twenty percent carbohydrates and sixty percent fat or a low fat diet with fat restricted to twenty percent or less. Although both groups lost weight and experienced reduced insulin resistance, the group that followed the low carb diet experienced an unexpected change in the degree of flexibility of their arteries – raising concerns about heart and blood vessel health. It seems that the low carb dieters developed stiffer arterial blood vessels which could increase their risk for heart and blood vessel disease. Stiffened arteries have even been associated with a higher risk of dementia.

Researchers involved in this study caution that this is a small study and more research is needed to confirm this finding, but if further studies come to the same conclusion it could speak poorly for the safety of low carb dieting. The good news is the arteries actually became less stiff in the group who ate a low fat diet.

There’s always been some concern about the popularity of low carb dieting due to the long term effects this type of diet could have on the heart. The high fat content of this type of diet also raises concerns about lipid levels, although low carb diets appear to lower high triglyceride levels which is a positive in terms of heart health.

This new finding does raise some questions. Since participants who followed a low fat diet also showed significant weight loss, this may be a safer option if you have a lot of weight to lose. Low fat diets are a time tested way to take those extra pounds off safely.

There are a lot of websites offering low carb diet plans, many of them a misleading (and some are even pure scam…). A good reliable source of information regarding recommended diet plans is the Losing Weight Easily blog.

Question by jd159: Do low carb diets really work? How many carbs a day is considered a low carb diet?
for example, if i where to keep up the low carb diet for about one month and then i start eating regular, will i gain more weight? or what are the “side effects” if i where to do this?

Best answer:

Answer by John A
Heck yeah they work, that’s how I lost 40 pounds. I would say under 100 grams of carbs a day is a low carb diet. You can’t start eating regular again, what I mean is you still have to watch what you eat because that’s how you got overweight is by eating the wrong things or too much of them. So you can eat nomally with carbs and stuff but just watch your total calorie intake. Keep an eye on your waist and if it starts getting too big cut back.

Everyone knows you need ‘balance” but the question is WHAT is the balance?….it sure as hell isn’t 70% carbs…which is what a lot of people are getting…especially at breakfast…cereal, toast, orange juice….that’s ZERO protein and zero fat. People don’t get fat eating Mickey D’s because of the 3 oz of low quality beef,,,,it’s the bun, sauces and huge order of fries.

@samtheman11111 I worked with a D1 football team that did bod pod analysis. Several players had 4-5% body fat according to the bod pod and they play American Tackle Football at those percentages year round (the season and spring ball).

@TSuperChallenge I think you should get your bf% tested and report back about what you just said. A friend of mine cut down for a show until the point were you could see the vains on his abs and got his bf% tested in the “Bod Pod” which is the most accurate method of testing today and came in around 4.5 something. The kinesiologist conducting the test told him to put fat on ASAP becasue if he dipped under 4% for an extended period of time it could be detrimental to his organs.

  4. TSuperChallenge says:

@samtheman11111 It’s not the body fat percentage. MANY athletes maintain 5% body fat for extended periods of time and feel GREAT. It’s the restricted calorie/ low-carb diet that puts bodybuilders in a terrible mood.

  5. samtheman11111 says:

@TSuperChallenge … carbs I tend to lose my fat storage at a slower pace then say if I do the the same however remaining on a ketogenic diet. Then again, I am a bodybuilder and perform no where near the amount of high intensity cardio you incorporate into your traing which having carbs help aid for energy levels.

  6. samtheman11111 says:

@TSuperChallenge The reason they are miserable is because of their sub 5% bf not from the lack of carbs. I’m not disagreeing with you in the aspect that the problem with most people is their tendancy to use a diet such as the ketogenic diet for a temporary fix then end up going back to their old eating habits and gain the weight back quickly. A healthy “Lifesyle” is the key to sucess in being fit no doubt. However from my personal experiences if I was to diet with a 500 calorie defict with..

  7. TSuperChallenge says:

@samtheman11111 Bodybuilders use Ketogenic diets to look good on a stage for 1 day. Their ketogenic diets are not intended to be maintained as part of a fit and healthy lifestyle. Also, if you’ve ever known a serious bodybuilder in the midst of a contest diet for an important show, you would know that they are miserable. They are prone to mood swings and very irritable.

Okay…. i’ve been doing a low carb diet it works fine. We still eat carbs, you get five servings of 15g of carbs a day equaling 75 total grams of carbohydrates a day. In my eyes thats not bad at all bro.

I like your videos but I must say your rather opinionated and not always correct with your claims. I’m cutting right now with a keto diet and maintaining my strength and getting much more vascular and already decreasing my waist size in only the first 3 weeks. I have to agree, the deit is probably not the best for everyone and most people are probably better off just dropping their calories and adding cardio to lose the weight. But there is reason why most bodybuilders use low carb diets.

@TSuperChallenge Hey Chris I really appreciated you posting this video. It was nice hearing from someone for once that carbs are good for you. But just one question, how many carbs do you consume? Do you keep track or just make sure you eat a well balanced diet (fruit, dairy, whole grains etc.) and not cut out any specific food group?

Low carb diets are an excellent way to lose bodyfat.in the short term, as long as you don’t go below your BMR in daily caloric intake. Where people run into problems is taking all cals to too low of a level and choose low quality nutrients, and unfortunate component left over from Atkins days when the diet allowed for any and all types of fats and proteins. Anything lower than 20% of your daily caloric intake coming from carbs can be considered low carb.

As for the long term, once you reach the desired goals, you don’t want to continue back on the diet that got you into trouble in the first place. This means cutting out the processed foods, especially processed carbs, which are so prevalent in the modern diet. A diet high in lean proteins, low GI carbs and good fats spread out over the day will always produce optimum results, along with a consistent exercise regimen.
